Mindfulness books for teens… calm on their own terms.

The KotsuZen Teen Series offers mindfulness books for teens who carry more than they let on. Each book gives young readers simple, honest tools for finding calm on their own terms. Instead of lectures, teens find practices that fit a real day… school, phones, friends, and all the noise between.
What Is the KotsuZen Teen Series?
The KotsuZen Teen Series is a growing collection of Zen-inspired books for teens and the adults who walk beside them. Each title turns old Zen wisdom into everyday practice. Also, every book speaks to teens directly, with respect and without talking down. So the series becomes a quiet companion, not another assignment.
Why I Wrote This Series
I wrote these books for my grandkids, and for the teens I see at school events and pickups. Some arrive bright and loud. Others carry a hard day quietly inside, where only someone watching closely would notice. And sometimes, that hard day belongs to someone I love.
His usual relaxed, happy face… so open, smiling, a greeting already on its way.
Not that day.
He walked up to me looking down, inside, so closed and preoccupied by overwhelm. He was wrecked. I just wanted to gather up his tall, gangly body, over a foot taller than me, and absorb all the crushing pain of the biggest betrayal in his young world. It was threatening to smother his positive, caring outlook on life. I wanted to reach into him, into that memory, and dilute it somehow with my own positivity and love. Instead, I had to sit with it, holding one simple thought of my love and support. Then gently repeated it as if to push the sorrow out.
He didn’t need me to fix it. He needed me to stay. But his young teen bravado wouldn’t let him.
Teens today are not just growing into adulthood. They are also growing into the task of holding a fragile planet. Meanwhile, they sort through more noise than any generation before them. So this series doesn’t try to fix anyone. Instead, it sits beside them.
Kotsu Zen Teen Energy
Kotsu Zen Teen Energy meets teens wherever they sit on the energy spectrum. The book pairs short mindfulness lessons with journal and workbook pages. That way, readers practice right on the page as they go. Chapter 3, Finding mindfulness in real life, finding calm in the chaos, sits at its heart. In fact, it holds the line I hope every teen remembers.
You are allowed to pause and feel, “This is a lot,” without apologizing for it.
108 Koans for Teens
A koan is a short question you sit with rather than rush to solve. 108 Koans for Teens doesn’t hand teens answers. Instead, it hands them questions worth sitting with… the kind that don’t resolve in a scroll or a sound bite, but slowly, over time, become a way of seeing.
108 Koans for Teens arrives November 15, 2026. Follow along for first looks and launch-day news.

How to Use These Mindfulness Books for Teens
Mindfulness grows through small, steady moments. These six steps help a teen begin with just five quiet minutes a day.
- Find five quiet minutes. A bedroom floor or a bus seat works fine.
- Read one short section or a single koan.
- Pause and breathe before turning the page.
- Write a line or two in response, even a messy one.
- Notice what shifts in your breath, body, or mood.
- Come back tomorrow, because practice grows through return, not perfection.
For Parents, Grandparents, and Educators
These books also open the door to real conversations. As your teen reads, invite them to copy a favorite koan onto a scrap of paper. One they’re struggling with works too. Drop each scrap into a koan bowl. Then draw one out at dinner, in class, or in the car after a stressful day. It becomes a small moment to decompress together. Or simply ask your teen which page stirred something up.
Some days, a teen has nothing to say. That’s okay. I talk about it anyway, sharing my own answer out loud, even if I’m mostly chatting with myself. That open, honest moment still shows them the door is there whenever they’re ready.
Adult readers can begin with The Essential Handbook of Daily Zen Hacks on the KotsuZen Books page. You can also read more about Audrey Kaihatsu and the roots of this practice.
Frequently Asked Questions About Mindfulness Books for Teens
What are mindfulness books for teens?
Mindfulness books for teens teach young readers to notice their thoughts, feelings, and breath without judging them. The KotsuZen Teen Series roots that practice in Zen tradition and everyday life. Instead of long lectures, each book offers short lessons, reflective questions, and space to write, so teens can find calm on their own terms.
Are the koans in 108 Koans for Teens hard to solve?
No. Classical Zen koans mostly feel like riddles with no answer. When I first read them, I kept trying to “figure them out,” and it brought nothing but frustration. The koans in this book work differently. Each one asks a direct, reflective question that a teen can actually answer. Over time, sitting with these questions becomes a gentle doorway into Zen practice.
Which KotsuZen book should my teen start with?
Start with Kotsu Zen Teen Energy if your teen wants hands-on tools for stress, since its lessons come with journal and workbook pages. However, if your teen enjoys quiet reflection and big questions, choose 108 Koans for Teens. The two books also work well together, one building daily habits, the other deepening reflection and the quiet practice of knowing themselves.
Can schools order the KotsuZen Teen Series in bulk?
Yes. KotsuZen offers bulk orders for schools and school districts. Because each lesson is short, the books can fit naturally into advisory periods, wellness programs, or a counselor’s office.
